High School Students Apply Now for Exciting Science and STEM Programs for Summer!
Students entering grades 10-12 can apply now to participate in exciting science and STEM enrichment programs being offered this summer at the NYC Department of Education’s Genovesi Environmental Study Center and NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics. Programs feature a 1-week program, high school internships, and a 4-week college credit bearing course. All participants receive a daily metro card.
Plants and Society: An Introduction to Plants and Their Importance in Society
The NYC Department of Education’s Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC), in partnership with SUNY Old Westbury, are offering high school students an opportunity to experience a college-level course and earn four SUNY college credits. Plants and Society: An Introduction to Plants and Their Importance in Society, is a lecture and laboratory course. This course will introduce students to the diversity of form and function in plants, and will emphasize sustainability and plants’ importance in society. Group and individual projects will include the use of light and dissecting microscopes, study of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, cultivation of common vegetables, and exploration of vegetation. Students who successfully pass this course will earn four SUNY college credits. Monday, July 9, 2018 to Thursday, August 2, 2018
Internship Opportunities at the Genovesi Environmental Study Center
The Genovesi Environmental Study Center (GESC) is looking for responsible, motivated, and energetic high school students entering grades 10, 11, and 12 to participate in an exciting internship opportunity. GESC offers a variety of internships including teacher assistants, farmer assistant, or animal care providers. Interns will create and complete a culminating project at the end of the internship. At the conclusion of the internship, students will receive a certificate verifying the number of hours worked and the contributions made to GESC. There are a variety of positions and dates throughout the summer.
Robotics Internship at the NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics
The NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics (NYCCAAM) is looking for responsible, motivated, and energetic high school students to participate in an exciting internship opportunity. Selected interns will work with elementary and middle school campers using LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotic kits, and will create and lead a LEGO Mindstorms activity as a culminating project. At the conclusion of the internship, students will receive a certificate verifying the number of hours worked and the contributions made to NYCCAAM. Two sessions available – Monday, July 9, 2018 to Friday, July 20, 2018 and Monday, July 23, 2018 to Friday, August 3, 2018.
Earth Climate Institute at the NYC Center for Aerospace and Applied Mathematics
In NYCCAAM’s week long Earth Climate Institute, high school students explore climate change through the lens of NASA’s Earth Observing System, discovering how remote sensing works, learning how the Earth Observing System satellites collect the data, and using computer programs to investigate the meaning of the data. In addition, students meet with NASA scientists to hear about their current research and learn about careers at NASA. On the final day, students take a simulated mission to the International Space Station where a developing crisis in Earth orbit will be putting all that has been learned by the participants to the test. Monday, July 30, 2018 to Friday, August 3, 2018.
